The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed two contracts on Monday, worth a combined Rs 2,867 crore, for constructing an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) plug for the Defence R&D Organisation’s (DRDO’s) AIP system and its integration onboard Indian submarines.

A contract was also signed for the integration of Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) on board the Kalvari-class Scorpene submarines.

Both contracts were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on December 30, 2024.

The contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai (MDL) for construction and integration of an AIP plug is worth around Rs 1,990 crore.

Meanwhile, a contract was signed with Naval Group, France for integration the EHWT that is being developed by the DRDO for an approximate cost of Rs 877 crore. This would greatly augment the firepower capabilities of Kalvari Class submarines of the Indian Navy.

The AIP technology is being indigenously developed by DRDO. The project for construction and integration of the AIP plug will enhance the endurance of conventional submarines.

This work would generate employment of nearly 300,000 man days. The integration of EHWT will be a collaborative effort by Indian Navy, DRDO and Naval Group, France.
