As Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kochi and INS Teg rendezvous with the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG), the Indian Navy’s MiG-29s from the Black Panthers squadron took off for an aerial interaction.
IAF Sukhoi-30 MKI and Jaguars, AWACS, AEW&C aircraft, IL-78 refuellers, Indian Navy P-8I long range maritime patrol (LRMP) aircraft and Dornier recce aircraft are also participating in this Passage Exercise (PASSEX), which involves the US Navy carrier strike group (CSG), USS Ronald Reagan, during its transit through Indian Ocean on 23 and 24 Jun 2021.
Indian warships and aircraft will engage in joint multi-domain operations with the CSG, which is structured around the Nimitz class aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan, an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Halsey; and a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh.
The two-day exercise aims to strengthen the bilateral relationship by demonstrating the ability to integrate and coordinate comprehensively in maritime operations. High tempo operations during the exercise will include advanced air defence exercises, cross-deck helicopter operations and anti-submarine exercises. The participating forces will endeavour to hone their war-fighting skills and enhance their interoperability as an integrated force to promote peace, security and stability in the maritime domain.
An Indian MoD statement said: “Indian Navy and US Navy regularly undertake a host of bilateral and multilateral exercises which underscore the shared values as partner navies, in ensuring commitment to an open, inclusive and a rule-based international order.”
