I will second this. If memory serves right, this was on the National Geographic Mission Navy.

How come no one is noticing that there are vehicles parked around and trees so close by, how can this be a engine test facility

    ReplyDelete
  59. Interestingly, if you go by the name on the platform and http://drdo.gov.in/drdo/labs/DRDL/English/index.jsp?pg=facility.jsp it looks like a engine test facility, but this is odd with all those trees around.

  66. OKAY, HERE'S THE ANSWER: THIS IS THE VERTICAL TEST FACILITY THAT WAS BUILT IN THE 1970s TO TEST THE LIQUID FUELLED DEVIL MISSILE... A LIQUID FUELLED MISSILE THAT WAS MODELED ON THE SOVIET SA-2.

WHILE THIS WAS NOT A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT, IT LED TO THE THEN FLEDGLING DRDL ACCUMULATING SEVERAL IMPORTANT CAPABILITIES... WHICH HAVE FED INTO THE CURRENT GENERATION OF MISSILES.

THE DEVIL'S ENGINE, AS ALSO THOSE OF OTHER MISSILES OF THAT GENERATION, USED TO BE GROUND TESTED IN THIS FACILITY.

NO GOLD STARS FOR CORRECT ANSWERS BECAUSE IT SEEMS MOST OF THEM HAVE COME FROM GOOGLING 'VTF'. I SHOULD HAVE OBLITERATED THAT, SO THE FAULT IS REALLY MINE.

NO WISECRACK AWARDS FOR "WTF". IT WAS TOO OBVIOUS!

WISECRACK AWARD No 1: FOR "ANONYMOUS", 9TH SEPT 16:31... for his answer: NEW MULTI-LEVEL OUTDOOR TOILET DEVELOPED BY DRDO... THIS IS THE VANITY TEST FACILITY (VTF).
