Readers' Quiz No 3: what might this be?

It is easy to figure out what this is in generic terms. So readers are invited to guess the identity of this piece of equipment in more specific terms. A Gold Star for the most detailed (and correct) identification.

  1. Well there is a small shaped charge in front and a bigger shaped charge in the back -- so it is a tandem warhead for an anti-tank weapon.

Since I dont see a rocket motor, it is probably air dropped or artillery launched.

  2. This is a smart bomb!!

Ok, we want F-INSAS pic in the background of MSMC in the pic....

But the only irking point is NAG is a tandem warhead missile, but if it had both warhead in front of the motor, then does it have a triple tandem warhead???

    ReplyDelete
  39. sorry scratch that, there are 2 HEAT rounds obviously this design is oriented towards things with multiple layered armour, definately not nag that has a fiberglass body.

Euromissile MILAN. final answer lock kardiya jai.

    ReplyDelete
  40. don't really know too thin on the hull to be a torpedo, nag is fiberglass, anti Armour config. points to either a new development or warhead obscured by bodywork, I mean there are plenty of possibilities like, sea eagle, Martel. too big to be anti tank from infantry point of view heavy mounted at gm of some kind or anti shipping.

  41. ajai has taken it personally to fox us at least once ! :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. Three parts rivetted together.
Bottom part appears to be HE for initial propulsion.

Second, part appers to be something like filled with secondary charge or limitor for actuation of the base charge.

No nose cone or distance limitor Hence traditinal HEAT could be ruled out.

Appears to be tendem warhead for tank gun ??

May be HESH or may be HEAT.

Something which will create double impact such as arty bomb or a bomblet for bunker brusting, craters, holes on the runway, etc.

  54. Ok I throw my Chawani again :

The Nose is semi circular shape with PIBD Fuse, may be.
The fitment inside is ventury assembly
Circular cut near nose could be for rotating band.

Copper liner is not visible but perhaps can be fitted in the front section along the walls to form a slug

HE composition is to be filled

But what is that HE ventury seprately iside the tube?

The second section is low pressure chamber.

Third and bottom section is propellant charge chamber.

Base plug and closing cap could be inserted or may exist within..

It a High Explosive dual purpose catridge either for Carl Gustav or a tank gun (HPDP) or HESH round.

Is it an ammunition for Arjun?

May be I am focussing on your interest and expertise

    ReplyDelete
  60. Desi Nuclear bomb..

    ReplyDelete
  61. Maybe an anti submarine rocket (RBU kind of warhead) or intelligent underwater mine warhead me thinks

    ReplyDelete
  62. Inside of Nag missile

    or

    NSTL lightweight torpedo

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ok lets see what we have here it is definitely guided in the terminal phase so rules out ballistic weapons,
it is too thin/small to be a submarine torpedo, warhead section.

KLUB class cruise missile warhead possibly if this object fits the dimensions of a 533mm tube or close to that.

definitely not man portable as the object in question will require a motor strapped on to it.

Not sensor fused as you need may of those and they are generally a single HEAT round.

not air to air as those have continuous expanding rod warheads..

Not an anti submarine mortar round as those are pure blast and are not needed with directional attack.

what its role can be guessed it has to work against heavy armour,
only 2 things now a days have that warships and tanks.
that narrows it down. Heavy antitank missile so not on fast jets, close air support role helicopter borne atgm, maybe Russian or as yet undisclosed drdo project. Unlikely those are released with fanfare and not publicly released on blog sites.

The tube in the front is disturbing, it would degrade radar performance unless it is a intended physical aperture

taper in the mid section indicates that there is some constraint, physical package. needed to fit warhead bus, or is it because of the mode in which this is to operate. perhaps dictated by aerodynamics.

there was talk of India getting hellfire missiles, could we have managed to get out drdo to manufacture its warhead.

So with all these in consideration, i have no definite answer but just that it is either an anti tank missile or anti ship missile.

  64. Hello Mr. Shukla:

I will hazard a couple of guesses - dunking sonar or towed torpedo decoy.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Looks more like a canister launched missile, for now we know only of sagarika or is it K15.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't want to keep guessing , but it has features of a air launched missile as there are two charges there.

Looks more like the Nag, Helina is the best guess, however can't say for sure only for the reason that the top of the missile does not seem to have a transparent head, but it looks so close.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ok. It is the MMW radar warhead for the Nag . NOT the current IR seeker based Nag warhead.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ajai,
It has a seeker at the front and warheads also.
Could it be the new HELINA missile with infra red seeker.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thats a inflight refueling probe model rather crude one....

    ReplyDelete
  70. Laser Proximity Fuse in a warhead?

    ReplyDelete
  71. LAHAT tank launched missile

    ReplyDelete
  72. A warhead for PINAKA missile system. And the two visible shape charges may be for Anti-Armor duties???

    ReplyDelete
  73. bunker buster warhead?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anti Submarine Rocket on the lines of 90R which are launched from RBU 6000...and are manufactured by L&T.

    ReplyDelete
  75. drdo assembled anti tank missile INVAR without fins

    ReplyDelete
  76. If it isn't the seeker-warhead combination of the nag/helina, then my guess would be that it is seeker-warhead cutout of the DRDO developed tank gun launched laser guided missile(sorry I dont know its exact name, but I still qualify for the gold star right?); something like the Israeli LAHAT , which was displayed routinely in expos since forever.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Its an anti-submarine mine.

Where is the pics of F-INSAS?? pls...

    ReplyDelete
  78. It clearly has a tandem warhead and a seeker maybe - depending on how closely the mockup resembles the real thing.. but somehow it still doesn't seem to suggest its a NAG's cross-section...

I also can't figure out how it can be a torpedo warhead - the shape and the proportions don't look right even for the small air-launched ones..
I'm also unsure if they use tandem warheads in torpedoes (enlighten me anyone?!)

For sure its NOT a Pinaka or Smerch! Wrong looks, wrong "cross section"..
(Pinaka itself can be "MIRVed", sort of..)

Brahmos, well honestly I have no idea about that one..

I will put my money on it being a Prithvi MIRV "bomblet".
    (Or is it the incendiary??!)

But I don't know why it looks something of a MIRV bunker-buster (bomb) or anti-tank munition to me! :-o
Maybe the "bomblet" has a bunker-buster or anti-tank variant as well??!

So final answer - a Prithvi MIRV "bomblet" submunition..

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thats a MIRV for Agni OPr Prithvi Missiles.

  80. First Tiny Star for Anonymous 10:25

Small Brownie point for Daanish for his reasoning, even though it did not lead to the correct answer.

Medium Star for Anonymous 16:59... since this is very similar to a LAHAT.

And the BIG GOLD STAR goes to.... ABHIK.

It is the ATGM that will be fired from the Arjun tank gun.

  91. A “totally new missile,” called Agni II – is to be tested in September from the Wheeler Island, off the Orissa coast.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Agni II – has two stages and both are powered by solid propellants. “It has several advanced technologies,” sources in the DRDO said.
